Why Dinjan Matters
Dinjan, Assam, was a vital Allied base in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theatre during WWII. It was a place of immense strategic value and deep human cost. Yet its history remains largely overlooked.
This page brings together fragments of that history: stories, documents, and memories that deserve to be seen, shared, and remembered. It is my modest effort to honor those who served here, many of whom never made it home.
Want to learn more? I've written two short pieces that explore Dinjan's overlooked legacy:
Beyond the modern-day landscapes lies Dinjan’s storied past as a critical Allied airfield during World War II. This collection brings together rare wartime photographs, archival documents, published research, and personal family histories to illuminate Dinjan’s military significance and the human stories connected to it. From the strategic role it played in the China-Burma-India theater to memories passed down through generations, these resources offer a window into a defining era.
This photo carousel offers a glimpse into civilian life around the restricted Dinjan airfield. From serene tea estates to children playing cricket, these images highlight the local landscape and daily rhythms of a community. While the base itself remains off-limits, these scenes reflect the enduring life just beyond its boundaries.
These rare photographs offer a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals from the Dinjan region and nearby villages during the late 1930s to 1940s. These portraits hold historical value, showcasing the personal stories of those living in a time before the area became a key military site. Such images are exceptional for their era and location, providing valuable context to the social landscape of the region.

A formal portrait of my uncle, aunt, and family taken in the 1940s. Staged family photos were rare in this remote part of the world, making this image an important reflection of the time.
A portrait of my father with local villagers from near Dinjan, captured in the 1940s. This photo highlights the connections between the community and the evolving events of the era.
Do you recognize anyone in these photos?
Dinjan has often been left out of the larger WWII story. If you or anyone you know has memories, photos, or stories connected to Dinjan — or recognizes anyone pictured — I’d love to hear from you.
